NEW YORK (AP) - For years, it was said the Internet might turn
out to be the death of newspapers. Now, it's magazines that are
feeling some serious heat -- in this case, because of digital
piracy. A new Web site called Mygazines.com is urging people to
copy and upload popular magazines that are currently selling on
newsstands. That means visitors will be able to read high-quality
digital copies of dozens of current titles like People, Men's
Health in their entirety. At last count, the site has 16,000
registered users. And some legal experts say it's a "flagrant"
violation of copyright laws. There's one hitch, though: it's run by
an offshore company whose owners can't be tracked down through
traditional methods, which means the site can be difficult to shut
down.
